Abstract

This paper deals with tourism in the Chattanooga area. It has three main focuses. First, a profile is developed for the typical visitor and his or her economic impact in the local economy. Second, the travel industry in Chattanooga is studied by an analysis of several reports compiled by Carrier & Associates for the Lookout Mountain Attractions . Third, two questionnaires are developed and tested for use by the attractions.

Acknowledgments

During the spring semester of 1985, several different possible departmental honors proposals were being discussed. During a meeting with Dr. Robert Fulton, Director of the Honors Program, the idea of a project on tourism in the Chattanooga area arose. Dr. Fulton provided the names of two people to contact, Mr. Bob Elmore of the Chattanooga Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Mr. Bill Chapin, president of Rock City. Mr. Elmore's associate, Mr. John Payne, helped give the project some focus. In addition to studying the general impact of tourism in the Chattanooga area, he proposed that the project should also focus on the three Lookout Mountain attractions -- Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline. These attractions had commissioned several studies from Carrier & Associates dealing "with developing strategies and tactics for boosting traffic" . Mr. Chapin, provided copies of the initial reports and offered to help in the future. Other individuals that have proven invaluable to this study include Dr. Mohammad Ahmadi, Mr. Jack Steiner , Mr. Jack Holland , Mr. Crawford Harris , Mr. Robert Roark , Mr.Scott Clark , and Ms. Peggy Harding .
