Abstract
A wide variety of theoretical backgrounds can exist between two different art programs. This paper observes and compares two different art programs that are currently being implemented in two elementary schools of the Hamilton County Department of Education. The theoretical background of the first program, Arts Integration (AI), promotes the teaching art in combination with other subjects. The theoretical background of the second program, Discipline-Based Art Education(DBAE), promotes the teaching of art as its own subject area. First, this paper briefly describes the history of each program, including explanations of the curriculum, program antecedents, and both positive and negative critical analysis. Second, the paper provides a brief description of the two schools, including size, demographics, and a brief history of the two programs in the schools thus far. It also describes for each school an observation of a lower level art lesson (grades K-2) and one observation of an upper level art lesson (grades 4-5), composing a total of four observations at the two schools. Next, the paper compares the observed lessons of the two programs in terms of the goals of the lessons and the processes that students took to attain those goals, any interdisciplinary connections within the lessons, and the accuracy of the negative criticism of each program already discussed in the paper. Finally, the paper concludes with the overall results of the observations of the comparison of the programs and the author's personal preference between the two.
