Abstract

The focus of this report is Maclellan Island, also known as Chattanooga Island. Maclellan Islandis located in the Tennessee River directly under the Veteran's Bridge from about river mile 464.3 to 464.9. In the summer of 1983 a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga archaeological field school surveyed part of the island to determine if any historically significant sites might be harmed by the construction of the Veteran's Bridge. During the survey both prehistoric and historic remains were recovered. Although I did not participate in the 1983 field school, I did spend about 150 hours in the lab analyzing all of the artifacts in 1989 and 1990. In this report I will explain how I analyzed and cataloged the artifacts. I will also discuss how the people who left these remains lived, and when their first contact with Europeans was believed to have occurred. Also included are maps of artifact frequency in the areas surveyed and a discussion of their significance.
