Abstract
Within the field of music education, the history of marching band in public schools has not been thoroughly treated. By documenting the contributions of individuals in marching band, it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the position of marching band in education. A. R. Casavant gained national prominence through a theoretical approach to marching band instruction, execution, and drill design called precision drill. Formerly the band director at Chattanooga City High School, Casavant is currently retired and residing in Chattanooga, TN. The purpose of this project is to document and examine his contribution to education through the marching band.
Acknowledgments
I would like to thank all of the wonderful band directors who took the time to fill out my survey, and all of Mr. Casavant's friends and colleagues who assisted me through interviews. I owe a great deal of gratitude to Mr.Casavant for allowing me to document his work which has contributed so much to music education. In addition, I sincerely appreciate the time and advice of my committee members. For the initial suggestion of this topic, I would like to thank Mrs. Janet Hale, who always supports me in everything I do. Also, I am indebted to my friends and family for the understanding they have shown me throughout my sometimes turbulent efforts on this project. I especially need to recognize Randy and Russell Burt for being my "knights in shining armor" through several project-related crises. Most of all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my project director, Dr. Bill Lee, without whom this project would not have happened. He was eternally patient and encouraging, and he taught me a tremendous amount about the research process.
