Abstract

This thesis contains two parts: a craft paper on dialogue and seven chapters of a young adult historical fiction novel. The craft paper focuses on the use of dialogue to convey information rather than other means such as backstory and flashback, and it analyses these strategies in three historical novels, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel and Anne Boleyn: A King’s Obsession by Alison Weir. The novel chapters included are from Act III of Declare I Dare Not, focusing on the tumultuous ending of Anne Boleyn’s reign as Queen of England. After using witchcraft to seduce the king and secure her throne in earlier chapters, Anne now faces her downfall as Henry VIII’s eye turns elsewhere and he prepares to rid himself of her for good.

Acknowledgments

So many people have made this thesis possible. Thank you to Mrs. Stacy Reeves for her early support and enthusiasm for my writing, and to Dr. Bryan Hampton and Dr. Jennifer Stewart for their feedback and constant support during my time in the UTC English Department. I especially want to thank Professor Sybil Baker who has been instrumental in this novel from its inception, and without whose support and gentle pressure, none of the writing I am so incredibly proud of would have ever been possible. To my six best friends, who have let me rant about Tudor history and listened with enthusiastic nods, and my boyfriend, whose overwhelming love helped pull me through the darkest scenes. To my grandparents, who have held my hands to lead me through every hard life moment. Finally, to my parents, Momma and Mike, Dad and Kris, who have loved and encouraged every word I have ever put on paper. I am who I am because of you.
